Ms. Vibha Datta Makhija is a Senior Advocate designated by the Supreme Court of India in September 2013. She graduated from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi, studied law at the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, and holds an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington D.C.

She began her litigation career in 1992 in the chambers of Late Shri Arun Jaitley and qualified as an Advocate-on-Record in 2000. Her practice spans constitutional, criminal and service law, education law, arbitration and insolvency. She has served as Standing Counsel for the State of Madhya Pradesh and represented the Union of India before the Supreme Court.

Besides having a flourishing litigation practice, she has been appointed amicus curiae by the Supreme Court several times especially to assist in development of efficient means of access to justice. In the case of Smruti Tukaram Badade v. State of Maharashtra (2021) she has worked closely with Chief Justice Geeta Mittal (Retd.) for the implementation of the Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centre Scheme in all courts in India. She is amicus counsel in the case of Shankar Mahato v. State of Bihar, concerning delays in the delivery of legal aid system. She is also appointed as the Counsel for the three judges Committee chaired by Chief Justice Geeta Mittal (Retd.) which was set up by the Supreme Court for Rehabilitation of affected victims of 2023 Manipur Violence.

In 2013 she led the framing of the Gender Sensitisation Rules and establishment of the Gender Sensitisation Committee at the Supreme Court.

From 2017 to 2021, she served as Vice-Chairperson, and subsequently as Chairperson of the Appellate Board of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), and has also served on Georgetown Law’s Asian Law Alumni Advisory Board (ALAAB). She was a Member of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) from 2013 to 2015.

Currently she is serving as a Member of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Examination Committee.
