Prof (Dr.) Ved Kumari
Professor Ved Kumari served as the Vice Chancellor of National Law University Odisha from 20 March 2021 until her retirement in March 2026. Prior to this assignment, she was a Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, where she served from 2001 to 2021. During her distinguished academic career, she also held several important administrative positions, including Professor-in-Charge of Law Centre-I (1 August 2012 – 14 October 2013) and Chairperson of the Delhi Judicial Academy (July 2009 – July 2011).
Professor Ved Kumari obtained her LL.M. from the University of Delhi in 1981 and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1994 for her doctoral research on “The Juvenile Justice System in India.” Earlier in her career, she served on the faculty of the University of Jammu from 1983 to 1985.
An internationally acclaimed scholar, Professor Ved Kumari has been the recipient of several prestigious academic fellowships. She was a Fulbright Fellow at Vanderbilt University, USA, in 1997, where she co-taught a seminar on Children and the Law with Professor Susan Brooks. In 1998, she was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, where she undertook post-doctoral research on the Juvenile Justice System in the UK. She also spent a year in Russia studying legal frameworks and advocacy relating to children in difficult circumstances, further strengthening her comparative expertise in child rights and juvenile justice.
Professor Ved Kumari is widely recognized for her outstanding contributions to legal education, juvenile justice, child rights, criminal law, and judicial training. Her scholarship, academic leadership, and commitment to legal reform have significantly influenced legal education and child protection jurisprudence in India and beyond.
